Pépère's house!

Pépère, for everybody who doesn't know, is Armand Gaudet, or what his descendants call him! (Born in 1886, lived 94 years, moved to Bellevue, Sk, in 1903, had 9 kids, who then had 62 kids, and now we are over 300, including spouses. A prolific pioneer, successful with peas, filling 3 boxcars one year in the 1940's, unheard of in those days, unlucky with his leg.)

Below is the house where Pépère was born and raised. Its outward appearances have obviously changed over the years, as well as having received interior modifications like the addition of electricity, cable, appliances as well as computer hookups. However, it always had running water, even a hundred years ago!

Its also the house and farm that Ernest sold to make his fist full of dollars, before moving to Bellevue.

Its a wonderful house in an ideal setting. No wonder Ernest was apparently quite choked up when all was sold. I'd be like that as well, if I would be leaving the family's home of 135 years.

Behind Pepere's house above was their field! Nice and close, actually it had to be, because the field was worked by hand. If you look in the picture to the right, more specifically the bushes at the end of the field to the right hand side in the picture, that's where their maple sugar/syrup shack was located.

The field attached to the house!

This is the house where Gerard Martin, Thérèse's Brother hid during WWII to avoid being a soldier for the English Crown! One of the curious things about St-Jacques is that all the houses face the church. So, the houses are perpendicular to the road, meaning that on your way to church you're looking at the back of the houses, as you can see to the left.

Then we headed off towards Joliette, meting Claire Venne-Bertrand, who's related to the Gaudet's. She's a sharpie! She never lets on her 88 years of age! She had gone to Bellevue by car in 1952, when it took 4 hard days of driving to get there. And this was in a time when they only had 2 weeks holidays. In the photo of her to the right we see her holding the picture of her Mother which was taken on her 100th birthday!

That Night! You'll never believe
where we ended up!
